Saturday STEM Academy

The Saturday STEM Academy provides 7th and 8th grade students the opportunity to further develop their interests in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in an unparalleled, educationally stimulating series of course offerings. The Spring sessions theme will focus on Sustainability (from sustain and ability-is the property of biological systems to remain diverse and productive indefinitely). Our projects and activities will explore sustainability via three STEM areas: Biotechnology-Food Production for Space, Programming with Python and Sustainability Engineering (Solar and Wind). Students will learn how to arrive at multiple solutions for any given problem via the engineering design process and most importantly through collaboration. In the Biotechnology Foods in Space, students will learn how to design food for space exploration that satisfies NASA standards. In the programming class, they will learn how to code using Python. Sustainability Engineering students will learn how to solve problems that utilize solar and wind energy. This program provides students with project-based activities that reinforce discovery, critical thinking, creativity, innovation and collaboration. The courses are offered at Passaic County Technical Institute from March 3rd to March 24th, 9:00am to 12:00pm. Join us in these hands-on courses where students learn teamwork, problem solving skills, and increase their self-confidence! Classes run from March 3rd to March 24th, 9:00am to 12:00pm. Payment of $90 per course is required for registration.

Course Descriptions

  • Biotechnology-Food Production for Space – Based on the requirements (NASA) for food digestibility, nutritional value, taste and with consideration of the physiology of the organism in space, students will work towards the production of food items that can be consumed by astronauts in a sustainable environment.
  • Computer Science – Students will learn to code using the programming language Python. Students do not need any prior experience. Participants will learn about object oriented programming.
  • Sustainability Engineering – Students will learn how to solve problems utilizing the Engineering Design Process (EDP) and in particular how STEM is incorporated in the field of sustainability. Our engineers will learn about solar and wind energy and how to make our environment cleaner and safer as our need for energy increases.
