STEM Academy Junior Duaa Raza Finds Early Success in the Field of Biomedicine

STEM Academy student Duaa Raza never backs down from a scientific challenge. Coming off of a recent first place win in the Microsoft Reno DigiGirlz Competition for her design of a heart disease prevention app, the promising young scientist from Totowa continued to push the boundaries of innovation in the Nokia Bell Lab North Jersey Regional Science Fair. Raza’s submitted project explored the complex topic of “CRISPR-Cas9 Gene Therapy for the Treatment of Coronary Artery Disease” and impressively earned 3rd place in the Biostatistics category.

As part of the challenging competition process, Raza completed a research plan, abstract, and presentation. After a first-round interview with an individual judge, she participated in a virtual interview with a large panel of esteemed judges comprised of scientists and engineers from local industrial and academic organizations. Awards were announced in a virtual ceremony on March 27, 2021.

The Nokia Bell Labs North Jersey Regional Science Fair (NJRSF) is a high school student science competition in which students, individually or in groups, present a wide variety of projects. Most of the projects are investigative in nature, posing and attempting to answer some question or problem, either through experimentation and design or in a theoretical sense. All areas of science, math, and engineering are included. The fair accepts entries from ten counties of northern New Jersey and draws top-notch competition from participating schools.
