March Student of the Month 2015

Peter Kelly

Peter Kelly is a young man from North Haledon who has used his time at PCTI to expand his horizons in areas of leadership and activities. This member of the School of Engineering is bright and talented, ranking in the top two percent of his class with a GPA of 4.3! Peter has taken numerous honors and AP classes in preparation for his academic future and has earned a solid standing on the Principal’s Honor Roll throughout his entire high school career.

This honorable bulldog has been a member of the NJROTC since his freshman year. In true leadership fashion, Peter served both as a Cadet Lieutenant and a Department Commander. When asked what he gained from being involved in the NJROTC, he explained, “It fostered a sense of discipline. My attention to detail really increased.”

Peter is a member of the National Honor Society and the Gifted & Talented program. Outside of school, he trains as a Sailplane Pilot, which utilizes engineless aircraft to stay aloft by riding air currents. His longest solo flight was one and a half hours. Peter is on track to earn his private license by July. He also acts as the Cadet Commander of the Civil Air Patrol Northeast Region Glider Academy.

In his free time, Peter can be found volunteering as part of the Abundant Life Reformed Church Youth Group and in the summer, he works as the Head Lifeguard at the Ramapo Ridge Recreational Center.

His fascination with the engineering field extends beyond high school. After graduation, Peter will attend Northeastern University where he will pursue a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. His choice was based on the college’s outstanding co-op program. “It’s a great school and I’m all about getting the best possible college experience.” In addition, Peter plans on specializing in emerging technologies. His interests include transportation, alternative energy, and medical devices.

When asked about one of the most important lessons he’s learned while attending high school, Peter replied, “In being a leader and dealing with others, it’s important to understand people and where they’re coming from - and then to use a combination of knowledge and empathy to make the best decisions possible.”

One thing’s for certain, Peter Kelly Jr. is certainly a man with a plan! His passion for life is most endearing and there’s no doubt that he will achieve success. Congratulations and good luck in the future!
