January Student of the Month

Erick Pinos

Erick Pinos is a young man whose thirst for knowledge has served him well in paving the pathway to success. This Hawthorne local and student of the Academy of Information Technology finds his greatest achievement is the ability to inspire others. “I would rather have one person say that I inspired them than to receive a hundred congratulations.”

Erick is referring to his latest and greatest accomplishment: his early acceptance into the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). What sets Erick apart from others is truly astounding. He challenges himself by using AP and honors classes as opportunities to prepare for the future. Erick went so far as to learn Physics 2 before the course was scheduled - all so he could pass the entrance exam to MIT. His willingness to go the extra mile in making his dreams come true is a necessary trait in achieving future success!

While his studies are at the forefront of his academic career, Erick is also involved in Gifted and Talented, FBLA, the National Honor Society, and NJ Boys State. He has also competed in MSG Varsity’s “The Challenge.” In addition to the aforementioned activities, he is involved in the STC Program with PCTI’s Technology Department. It is here that he applies his passion of fixing computers and problem solving, perpetuating his philosophy that one’s knowledge is expanded by applying what is learned in the classroom. But that’s not all. Erick has also taken to freelancing for local businesses. He has created countless websites, successfully integrating with the social media scene. He goes on to explain, “It’s a great marketing tool, plus it expands the use of social media in already successful business practices.”

In a similar vein, Erick has recently won a $2000 Record and Herald Scholarship energy with an essay about the importance of utilizing social media marketing in the world today. He has also received accolades for making people environmentally aware by developing the idea of the “Green Map.” This project marks historical areas of his hometown and has earned Erick the esteemed Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) 2012 Environmental Achievement Award. With so many accomplishments under his belt it’s no wonder Erick was accepted into MIT. This Bulldog says that his opportunities at PCTI defined his successes. His advice, “Take advantage of the chances you’re given and go beyond what you believe possible.” With such a positive attitude, Erick is sure to go far. Congratulations to this hard working and ambitious young man!
