February Student of the Month

Jovan Watlington

Jovan Watlington is a Paterson local who openly embraces the power that comes with being different. It is a combination of his talent, drive, and genial nature which fostered success for this member of the School of Performing Arts.

He’s always known acting would play a significant role in his life. “Theatre is everything to me. As a child, I found that my outlet for expression was performing. I started very young.” From cultivating his voice through song at Grace Chapel Baptist Church, to being scouted and participating in numerous productions, Jovan has always gravitated toward the spotlight. He’s become well known within the halls of PCTI as a promising performer on the rise.

In addition, Jovan has built quite the resume for his professional career. He has participated in all the Spring Musicals at PCTI and received the lead of Julian Marsh in this year’s 42nd Street. In addition to numerous performances as part of the Theatre Program, Jovan was also selected by NJPAC to participate in their rigorous Young Artist Summer Intensive program. It was here that he received the distinguished role of Tarzan.

Despite a very active and busy schedule, Jovan has maintained a great academic standing. He has achieved Principal’s Honor Roll with a GPA of 3.4 and is President of the Performing Arts Club. Jovan was also chosen as a member of Teen Pep and is part of PCTI’s Dance Club.

When it comes to being prepared for life after graduation, our actor extraordinaire has it covered. He’s already applied to seven universities which include NYU, PACE, Montclair State University, the University of the Arts, Carnegie Mellon, Point Park University, and Marymount Manhattan College. Amazingly enough, Jovan has been accepted to five of them so far!

“I really want to make all of my dreams come true. PCTI gave me such valuable experiences and without the people who believed in me, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Jovan has built a strong foundation for success by embracing all educational opportunities big and small. His future plans include receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from an accredited university. During his undergrad career as a senior, Jovan looks forward to performing in showcases to gain exposure with agents, casting directors, and managers.

Congratulations to this inspirational young man on his journey in realizing his dreams!
